Temporary Installation

Plan
Drawing of site and tennis court

Location: Neuberger Museum, SUNY Purchase, NY, May - October, 2001
Client:Neuberger Museum
Size:Regulation size tennis court (130'x70')
Materials:Tennis net, nylon lines, hardware, recorded sound
Budget:$6,000
Sound:Sioban Rigg
Fabrication:Scott Tiede

The site is where the tennis courts of the original estate at SUNY existed. It is clearly defined by stone steps leading into the court and a dilapidated chain link fence around its borders. In the enclosure there are still remnants of the court's original surface, a distinct green color. The tennis court is almost hidden by dense tree growth all around the perimeter, but the original playing surface has left the actual court space mostly oopen and still discernible as a space.
The project includes re-creating the original tennis court, floating one foot above the ground, with the clump of birch trees and other vegetation growing up right through it. Recorded sounds of a tennis game, audible before one even sees the court, emanate from several hidden speakers.Overview

Detail
Detail of Installation
We've re-lined the original court with white nylon 2-inch wide webbing floating approximately one foot above the ground. The lines are held in tension by small truck winches that can be ratcheted to keep the lines in tension. We have installed an actual net at the center of the court. The speakers with a split sound track spatially recreate the game in the court.
