Islands of Grass: |
Marsh Islands - South Boston Harbor Trail
Marsh Islands is a set of 10 round floating islands of marsh grass, proposed for the head of the Fort Point Channel. This area was originally a salt marsh but is now a very urban, hidden body of water dominated by large-scale transportation infrastructure. The Islands focus attention on the water, provide nesting space for waterfowl and help remove pollutants.

Recycling Rain: |
WaterBorn Landscape
This proposal for the landscaping of the open spaces of an apartment and retail complex in West Philadelphia addresses recycling condensate, capturing run off water and creating Rain Gardens to hold surface water on site while creating a functional urban landscape.

Horse Memories: |
Spectral Horse on Spectacle Island
Spectacle Isalnd lies in a very prominent position in Boston Harbor. The north side of its North Drumlin faces the main shipping lanes, the primary take-off and landing patterns of Logan Airpot and popular recreation areas in South Boston. With its recently greatly increased size, it is in potition to become a primary icon of Boston Harbor, greeting visitors and focusing residents' attention on the harbor.
We propose to delineate a giant figure of a running horse, the Spectral Horse, on the north face of the drumlin, using temporary lights and light reflecting materials. Once the image becomes established, we propose to make it into a permanent monumental installation for the entrance to Boston using white crushed clam shells. |
Why the horse figure? As part of the long and checkered history of Spectacle Island, about 100,000 horses were "rendered" here during the 19th century. These horses had hauled the dirt that filled much of the land of Boston. In death they were processed on the island into hides, glue, stock, horse hair and Neat's Foot Oil and left no waste. They were the only innocents in the history of exploitation on this piece of land. What creatures better deserve to be celebrated? What better way to acknowledge what happened on this piece of land? |
The shape of the Spectral Horse is designed to be read from both the air and from sea level. Its actual ground shape is stretched slightly to make the sea level view recognizable. The Horse is about 400 feet long at its extremes and about 250 feet high. |

| Transporting Light |
Global PortAl Dublin The Container forming the portal, a vessel of light, is to be suspended from a pair of steel frames, like the gantry cranes at the Port. It will be made of light like the Irish sky, with reflecting steel truss frame and transparent, faceted glazing. |
|
The containers along the sides form a wall of a new kind of landscape, both global and rooted in the local.
